Honey Sweetened Mug Brownie

This post and recipe was updated on September 20th, 2022.

My husband and I sat down for a movie night last week and before long my sweet tooth started nudging me. Ice cream or a yogurt parfait are my normal go-to’s, but neither of those were available at the time. So I pulled out an old winter favorite: a warm, homemade, fudgy brownie in a mug.

Mug brownies are extremely quick to whip together. We only paused our movie night for about 10 minutes while I mixed up this little treat. I’d say that’s pretty good time for a homemade dessert!

I’m pretty sure you’ll want to stick this recipe in your back pocket…just in case!

I enjoy this recipe for a few reasons. First, chocolate…second, brownie…and third, it contains no highly processed conventional sugar! Now I can’t say that you should eat one every night, but the naturally sweetened thing does make me feel a bit better. No egg, no refined sugars, and a minimal mess left. What more is there to love? Oh, and it’s really, really yummy! Bake for a shorter amount of time for a gooey brownie, or bake for longer if soft is what you enjoy.

How to Make a Honey Sweetened Mug Brownie

What You’ll Need

  • Coffee mug
  • Fork or spoon
  • Measuring spoons

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1 TBS of cocoa powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • 3 TBS of honey or maple syrup (or a combination of the two)
  • 2 TBS of butter
  • 1/4 cup of water + 2 TBS of water
  • 1/4 tsp. of vanilla
  • Additional toppings (optional): chocolate syrup, chocolate chips, powdered sugar, whipped cream, ice cream, strawberries, caramel, etc.

Instructions

  1. Add the honey and butter into a medium size coffee mug.
  2. Heat the honey and butter in the microwave until melted. Stir to combine.
  3. Combine the vanilla and salt with the honey and butter mixture. Stir well.
  4. Mix the flour and cocoa powder with the wet ingredients until well combined.
  5. Pour the water in and stir until the mixture is smooth and slightly runny.
  6. Heat in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes. The time depends on how fudgy you’d like your brownie to be. I find that 1 minute and 30 seconds leaves the outside baked and soft and the inside gooey (just as I like it!).
  7. Serve with the toppings of your choice or alongside of a cold glass of milk.

Keep in Mind:

  • Sometimes I bake my mug brownie a little too long and lose the fudginess that I really want. I’ve found a remedy for this situation! Just mix in a little chocolate syrup and you’re right back to gooey goodness!
  • Making more than one mug brownie at a time? I suggest mixing all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl and then pouring the batter into separate mugs. Just remember to adjust the ingredient amounts based on serving size (this recipe is one serving).

If you make this recipe and love how it turned out, feel free to come back and comment about your experience. I’d love to see your creation and how you served it!

Can I Use Regular Sugar Instead of Honey?

Yes, you can. I do suggest natural sweeteners like honey over processed sugars, but it can also be used in this recipe! Just use 4 TBS of white sugar instead of honey.
