Our farmhouse kitchen needed a bit of subtle wall art. Nothing too fancy because the space is definitely not fancy. My goal in decorating this home is to add in vintage elements that perhaps bring back a glimpse of the time in which it was built (which is supposedly about 100 years ago).
I’ve slowly gathered a small collection of platters and plates that are simply too pretty to hide in a cabinet, so to the wall they went!
A simple plate arrangement looks elegant, simple, and classic in any home regardless of it being a farmhouse or not.
Learn the ‘ins’ and ‘outs’ to hanging plates and platters on a wall simply and easily with this tutorial. The process is really not as complicated as you might think! You’ll find the list of needed materials just below, as well as tips for hanging. I’ve even included some advice on how to pair plates together to create your ideal accent wall. There are more farmhouse decorating ideas listed at the very bottom of this post. Enjoy!
Tips for Hanging Plates
- Be sure to clean the back of the plates very well before applying any adhesive. Bits of dust and grime will prevent it from clinging well to the plate!
- Lovely plates are everywhere if you keep an eye out for them! I find a majority of mine at antique stores, but search thrift stores as well. I found the white plate with the blue flower for $0.50 at a thrift store!
- A nail, screw, or hook can be used for either of these hanging methods. I recommend using screws for heavier dishes, like a platter, but a hook or nail should be secure enough for lighter plates.

How to Hang a Plate or Platter on the Wall
Option 1.
The first way you can hang plates or platters on the wall is by using disc adhesives. This kind of product is fairly simple to find. Most local hardware stores carry them!
The best part about utilizing these is just how simple the are!
- Clean the back of the plate.
- Activate the glue on the back of the disks with a bit of warm water. You can use your fingers to apply the water to the disk.
- Leave it alone for 3-7 minutes for the glue to become sticky.
- Center the disk on the back of the plate. Make sure that it’ll hang with the right side facing up!
- Press firmly and rub to expel any air bubbles.
- Allow the disk to dry for 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, pull on the ring to make sure the disk is properly bonded to the plate.
- Hang on a nail, screw, or hook in the wall, making sure whichever method you choose is strong enough to hold the plate or platter.
Are the Disks Permanently on the Plate?
Nope! The disk can be removed if you’d ever like it to be, so no worries about it forever being for the wall!
Pros and Cons
Pros: These plate hangers are fairly inexpensive (depending on where you purchase them). Maybe a bit higher in price than option 2, but still cheap! Another pro to these disk adhesives is that they leave the plate looking clean on the front. No grippers showing!
Cons: They require a 24 hour wait period before hanging, so they aren’t the quickest option out there.
Option 2.
The second way to hang plates and platters on the wall is by using steel plate hangers. I utilize these in my home and have been pleased with them thus far!
I know some people do not like these hangers because you can see the grippers on the front of the plate, but I personally don’t mind too much. It all depends on your preference!
These plate hangers are even easier to utilize than the disk adhesives!
- Measure the plate you’d like to hang in order to determine which size plate hanger you need to purchase.
- Find the plate hanger that fits the plate you’d like to hang. The package typically says what sizes of plates it will fit.
- Pick a spot on the wall for hanging.
- Secure a nail, screw, or hook to the wall, making sure whichever method you choose is strong enough to hold the plate or platter.
- Place the plate hanger on the plate or platter.
- Hang on the nail or screw by using the hooks on the plate hanger.

Will the Steel Plate Hangers Scratch my Dish?
They should not! Make sure that the plate hanger you purchase comes with rubber grippers because these will protect the plate or platter from scratches.
Pros and Cons
Pro: These plate hangers are very inexpensive, easy to install, require no wait time, and very secure!
Con: The grippers will show on the front of your plate or platter, so that may not be everyone’s preference! I personally don’t mind the look, but it is something to keep in mind.
