Why I Use Natural Cleaners in My Home

  1. Peace of mind. I want to know exactly what the ingredients are that I use in my home. This room spray consists of basic items that are safe for every member of the family. Say good-bye to those long lists of ingredients that no one knows how to pronounce (much less know what they are).
  2. Toxicity. Conventional products contain some extremely harsh chemicals. The kinds that you don’t want your children messing with. If our children shouldn’t touch them…why is it “OK” to spray them all over the surfaces of the home?
  3. Cost. This spray costs so much less to make than purchasing a cleaner from the grocery store.

How to Make Homemade Stain Remover Spray

Notes:

  • Test fabrics: Hydrogen peroxide is a natural whitening agent so it’s best to first test this homemade stain remover on darker fabrics before using.
  • Use baking soda: Add baking soda to the stain before you spray on the stain remover for extra cleaning power.
  • Substitute vinegar: If you don’t have hydrogen peroxide, you can also mix vinegar with dish soap to treat most stains. Let the solution sit on the stain for five minutes. Then soak the item in cold water overnight for tough stains. Wash as usual the next day.

Needed Supplies:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/2 cup of pure Castile soap

Instructions:

  1. Place a funnel in the neck of a glass spray bottle.
  2. Add 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of pure Castile soap.
  4. Gently stir and place the lid on the bottle (Do not shake the stain remover bottle, as this can make the mixture foam up quickly)
  5. Label the bottle. (If others help with laundry, add instructions on the label about how to use the stain remover and how to make more when it runs out)

How to Use This Stain Removing Spray

  1. Gently swirl the bottle to mix the ingredients before each use.
  2. Spray the solution directly onto the stained area of the clothes.
  3. Work it into the fabric with your fingers or a soft-bristled brush—an old toothbrush works great.
  4. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes.
  5. Wash the garment as you usually would.

The Function of Each Ingredient

Dark Colored Glass Spray Bottle:

Hydrogen peroxide and strong soaps are strong enough to eat away at plastic, so a glass bottle is a better option for storing this spray.

A dark colored spray bottle is necessary because hydrogen peroxide is very light sensitive and will eventually revert into plain water if not properly protected from light.

Hydrogen Peroxide:

Hydrogen peroxide is an oxidizing agent and a mild form of bleach that helps remove the staining tannins in food or dyes that are added to products. It can also work on oily stains. Use a three percent solution commonly sold in drug stores.

Pure Castile Soap:

Pure Castile Soap contains agents that break apart grease and oil molecules and lift them from surfaces.

How to Store Homemade Stain Remover

It’s best to store your homemade stain remover in a dark container for a few months to keep it fresh and effective. There’s a good reason why a dark container is necessary. Though pure Castile soap remains shelf-stable for several years, hydrogen peroxide is highly light-sensitive and will not remain shelf-stable for very long. That’s also why hydrogen peroxide is sold in dark bottles and not clear bottles or it would lose its cleaning ability. Hydrogen peroxide is also most effective when freshly opened but will still provide cleaning qualities for about six months. Eventually, the hydrogen and oxygen molecules will revert into a solution of plain water.
